Tips and Hints for Senior Portrait Sessions

Senior Portrait sessions include both a formal and informal sitting, unless you have decided otherwise.  I will do the formal sitting here at my house and then we will travel to the agreed upon locations for the rest of the informal pictures.  If you do not have any set ideas for locations, please let me know and we can brainstorm a few of my favorites to see what works best for you and your Senior.

High resolution images will be provided at the end of the shoot, along with a print release so that you may use the photos for whatever personal uses you would like.  It usually takes between two and four weeks for me to edit and finalize your images.  There will be a variety of formal pictures to choose from to use for the school yearbook (if a formal picture is required) as well, it is your choice which one you use.  A digital copy is all that is required for the school, so just copy it onto a flash drive and take your picture into the yearbook class/committee or let me submit it for you.

I am willing to do additional “specialty” pictures as well as collages/invitations/announcements/thank you notes for an additional price.  Please let me know if you might be interested in these extra shots prior to the completion of your DVD.

  • For young ladies:  you are responsible for hair and makeup, but you  can touch them up/change it as needed for the different pictures
    • For formal pictures, I will provide the black drape.  You must wear a tank top or strapless top for the formal portion of the session so there are no straps showing with the black drape.  It does go slightly off the shoulders, so a strapless bra is the easiest to work with, but straps can be moved aside with ease.
    • For formal pictures, remember to wear minimal jewelry.  The school suggests a simple necklace and tasteful pair of earrings.  You can add as much jewelry to your other outfits, but in order to ensure your pictures are suitable for the yearbook, you must follow school rules and guidelines.
    • For informal pictures, pick two to four outfits of your choice.  Remember to consider where you are having pictures taken.  A good idea is to pick one fancy outfit, one casual outfit, and something in between.  Denim pants/shorts and a white shirt are a good outfit choice as well because it lends itself nicely to a variety of shots.  Shoes, jewelry and any other accessories you might want to wear should also be picked out and paired with outfits beforehand to make for easier and more efficient clothing changes.
    • For informal pictures, if you play sports, play an instrument, do extracurricular activities remember to bring your jerseys/hats/helmets/equipment/instruments that you use for those activities.  I have a few sports related props, but the most meaningful pictures come from those taken with your actual equipment/uniforms.  We can also head over to the high school for pictures on the field if you would like, I just need to know that prior to the start of the shoot.
    • For all pictures, I will do my very best to get a variety of fun and creative shots.  Please let me know before we start the shoot if there are any pictures you or your parents are extremely interested in.  I try to do a few shots that are graduation centered as well, but if this is something you are not interested in, we do not have to do those.

  • For young men:  remember to ask if your parents want you to shave beforehand and schedule a haircut 3-5 days prior to your photo shoot
    • For formal pictures, you will need a dress shirt, tie and suit coat.  I have a suit coat and tie available, though most young men would rather chose their own tie.  If you are bringing your own tie, remember it must be tasteful and not “too busy”.  School colors are alright, but large patterns or inappropriate designs may mean that your picture will not make the yearbook.  Your safest bet is a single color or very small pattern.
